If you own or run a small company you want to keep your IT and admin costs and resources at a minimum and focus on activities that bring in revenue.

Owning and running your own dedicated exchange server involves a large upfront cost in terms of software and set up cost. Plus there are the ongoing costs in terms of licences per user and IT resource required to manage it.

Of course you can get an in-house dedicated exchange server, but one that is more suited to smaller companies but it’s worthwhile looking at the hosted options also.

Scalability is a very important consideration so if you plan to grow (of course you do!) it is a good idea to find a company that can offer you a managed dedicated exchange server, that will be hosted at that company. Many of these companies offer business email hosting and web hosting as a package.

Various companies offer both shared hosted services and managed or hosted dedicated servers so you can upgrade as you grow.

A hosted exchange server gives you flexibility and scalability and takes away the management headaches that come with running your own servers.

A further option is to set up your own in-house system which is much lower in cost but may not have all of the features you require. See the posts on Hosted Exchange Server.
